After a long, long break over Christmas and New Year,
I’m back in business again. Here I am, sitting in the kitchen, writing my blog and having a Sunday morning breakfast with my wife Lena. She is waiting to take part in a Skype-conference with her twin sister Vera, who lives close to us in Stockholm and with people working for their Russian company ”Efron Books” in Moscow. Suddenly she cries out: ”Damned! Snowstorm in Moscow, the conference is cancelled!”
Lena’s and Vera’s surname is Efron and they are connected with books in more ways than through their company. Their Great-great-great-great-(and-so-on)-grand father is mentioned in the Bible as the Efron who generously gave Abraham a cave where he could bury his beloved wife (what a way to sponsor your way into the most popular book in the history of mankind!).
More recently, Lena’s and Vera’s great-grandfather was the biggest publisher in Russia and famous for the ”Efron Encyclopedia” in 80 volumes. It was published before the revolution in 1917 but it’s still the most well-known of its kind in Russia. I have discovered during my concerts in Russia that many people still remember the name Efron because of this encyclopedia.
In any case, Lena and Vera have chosen to hold on to the family tradition. Together with Vera’s daugther Katja, they run a publishing house in Stockholm, ”Efron & Dotter”. And Vera has become a famous author, not at least for her book ”Såld” (Sold). A dramatic and true story about trafficking.
Their Russian company ”Efron Books” is actually a brilliant idea! Russia is filled with bookshops, publishing houses and with 100.000 new books released every year! All those lovely books published, but nobody really knows where to find them or where to buy them. The logistics are terrible!
But when you go to ”Efron Books” on the internet you can find the book you’re looking for even if you don’t remember the title or the authour. For example, you can search for the colour of the cover and what the book was about or whatever information you have. You’ll probably find the book and also where to buy it and where you get the lowest price! Amazing, isn’t it?!

Anyway, it’s heavy work running that kind of business, specially when living in another country. For Lena it’s hours and hours spend on Skype with the Moscow office everyday, endless discussions with computer programmers, salespeople and office staff. Of course they speak Russian and to me it sounds mostly like hours of quarelling. But when I ask Lena what they were arguing about she shakes her head and says:
”No, no, we were talking very friendly. How could you ever think something else?”
But I’m getting more and more used to the sound of Russian. By now I know that a normal Russian conversation sounds like sticking a knife in each other!
Anyway, I’ll tell you a little secret! Sometimes when I want a peaceful Sunday morning breakfast with Lena, it’s not too bad with a snowstorm in Moscow ;-)
