Secret Service:  Our music is something special

Secret Service:

On November 21st, Secret Service, the legendary Swedish band, took part in “Discotheque of the 80s" festival in St. Petersburg, Russia.

The band was interviewed exclusively for it’s official website.

- Youve visited many cities in Russia, which one did you enjoy the most and why?

Tim: St. Petersburg is the the most beautiful city. We were deeply impressed with Winter Palace during our last trip to St. Petersburg!

Ulf: Your city is very beautiful, I was excited to walk on its streets and come inside it’s historical buildings.

- When and where do you plan to premiere Flash In The Nightmusical?

Tim: We didn’t decide yet, but most chances that it will take place either in Stockholm or in Moscow.

- Did you finish working on it?

Tim: Almost... just need to get it recorded.

- Do you plan a CD or a DVD release of the musical?

Tim: First it will be released on the CD, and a DVD version might follow it later.

Ulf: We are currently working on the CD version of musical.

- Are any previous band members involved in the musical?

Tim: No.

Ulf: Secret Service songs are what is this musical all about.

- When do you plan to release The Lost Boxnew album and how many tracks will be on it?

Ulf: There will be 12 songs in this album; “Satellites”single will be released first. Originally written for “Lili & Sussie” this track have never been released so you’ll hear it for the first time.

- Is there a chance that Secret Service will play the whole show either in Moscow or St. Petersburg?

Ulf: It’s up to you, dear fans!

- Could you please tell us about Secret Services collaboration with Annica Boller. Is that right that Summers Back In Townwas the first song that Secret Service produced for a side artist?

Tim: I think it was.

Ulf: We like this song a lot. It was our first experience with a different artist.

-Why did Tonny Lindberg, Leif Paulsen and Leif Johansson quit the band in 1987?

Ulf: The band broke up in early 1987 because of some conflicts, but according to our contract we had one more album to release in Europe. We decided to make this album in a new style and featured Anders Hansson and Mats Lindberg.

- How did you meet Mikael and Jamie? Why did you decide to have them in the band?

Ulf: We’ve been friends for a years. Since the band broke up, Tim and me produced another artists for a pretty long time. In 2006 we took a chance to play life in Russia, so I said “Peace” to this guys and we decided to work together.

- Mikael and Jamie, you not just play with Secret Service, but also with Last Autumns Dream, how do you manage to work for both bands?

Mikael: It’s not a problem ‘cause we don’t do any studio work as Secret Service.

- This question is about Thank You For That Nightsong: why does Olas real name appear on this tracks credits only?

Tim: I remember seeing this question on the forum. Although Ola was mentioned in the question, I suppose that this track has Bjorn’s credit.

- Sweden is a country of great artists and bands, whats the secret? Is it a special country?

Ulf: There nine million swedes and they all love music!

Tim: Maybe this country is so horrible that it’s people tries to create and write music?

Ulf: I think that Sweden made a giant leap in it’s evolution in the 70-s and the 80-s, so people have got an opportunity to work with music. The overall vibe was great for musical creativity! I think that’s the reason.

Tim: Good music came from Russia!

- All Secret Service LPs except the last one have been released in Spanish. Records sold for South American market had Spanish track titles. Did you ever perform or record those songs in Spanish or just translated thir titles for these countries? Are there any song versions recorded in Spanish?

Ulf: it was very important for us to make Spanish versions of songs for the Sounth American market because our singles “Oh Sussie”, “Ten O’Clock Postman” and “Ye. Si. Ca” made hits in countries like Brazil or Columbia. Fans wanted to hear these tracks in Spanish, so they asked us if we could record Spanish versions. We said: ‘No, we can’t’. But we had a friend from Spain that helped us, so we recorded a few songs, but mostly for fun. We never released them.

- Will we ever hear these songs?

Ulf: Unfortunately we don’t have them.

Tim: Buy them if you find them!

- Tim, in spite of being an author of most Secret Services tunes, you never took pictures with the band, neither you appeared on their live shows nor on the LP artworks. What was this all mystery about?

Tim: I was very shy and didn’t like to appear in public.

- Could you please tell us about Like A Heartbeat’ song?

Tim (interrupting). I’ve seen this question on the forum as well, but I’ve never heard this track.

Ulf: (Surprised). Are you sure that it is Secret Service song? How did you find it?

- Yes, this track was released on the B side of Dont You Know, Dont You Know” single.

Ulf: I can’t tell, I don’t remember.

Tim: I’ve no idea, maybe it was another artist’s song...

Ulf: Please forward it to us if you find it!

- Do you have a hobby? What do you do on your leisure?

Tim: We have no hobby other than music.

Ulf:  Only music is my hobby.

- Do you like travelling?

Tim: Of course!

Ulf: I enjoy my vacations in South France. We don’t like long distance flights, we tour a lot with Secret Service which is rather tiring.

Tim: From time to time I go to visit our friend Björn Håkansson (auth.: - lyricist of most Secret Services songs) in Paris, France.

- And thats it? So close?

Ulf: Even St. Petersburg and Moscow are far enough for us, now think about Krasnoyarsk (Laughing).

Tim: Not long ago I had a wonderful vacation in Tunis. I suggest Tunis, if lot of sun is what you are looking for!

- Do you have plans to release any pre- or post-Secret Service projects in Swedish?

Ulf: Possibly...

- How many discs do you think youve sold all over the world?

Ulf: Somewhat about 20 millions I think...

Tim: There were so many pirated disks with our song sold in Russia, we can’t count that.

- Do you enjoy listening to the music?

Ulf: We listen to different music, from rock to pop and we consider Secret Service the best in it’s genre!

Tim: I prefer classical music: Rachmaninoff, Prokofiev, Chopin and others.

- Whats your opinion on Russian music? Do you know any Russian artists?

Tim: We like it, but we can’t read artist names.

Ulf: Yeah, that’s a real problem for us!

Tim: Actually, I remember one title - “Electronnaya Lubov”(e-Love, a cover version of Secrets Services Broken Heartssong in Russian)

- But you study Russian now, dont you?

Ulf: Yeah, we pretend. I’ve even attended classes in your language not long ago! (Laughing).

- Can you spell any words though?

Tim: So far we can only spell and read some letters as well as one restaurant’s title.

Ulf: We know nothing besides that.

- Do you plan to release an official DVD with your music videos?

Ulf: No, we don’t. But you can watch the music video for “Different”song on Youtube and we’ll definitely upload our older videos as well. We’ve just finished a music video for Satellites, you’ll see it soon on Youtube.

- What do you think about Eurovision? Would you like to participate in that show?

Tim: Not with Secret Service though.

Ulf: Our band “Ola + 3”played live on the Swedish music contest (auth.: Melodifestivalen in 1979), this event let Secret Service born. We keep writing for some Eurovision artists even now.

- Since 1982 Tim and Ola wrote songs for multiple artists and bands besides Secret Service project. How did you decide whether your new song will be recorded by Secret Service or by another artist?

Tim: We always acknowledged that Secret Service songs are very different!

- Did you get Olas lead vocal recorded on the songs that were later used by another artists?

Tim: Yeas, a few early Lilly & Sussie songs.

Ulf: We worked on their first LP and of course we have these tracks with Ola doing lead vocal. A song called “Satellites”can be a good example, it will be a first single on our new album.

- Finally, could you please tell us when did you decide to make music your destiny?

Tim: When I was 15...

Ulf: In my 12, when I’ve heard The Beatles for a first time. “Whoa! How cool it is!” I thought..

2010.

Thanks for posting this interview. I had some difficulties to understand because it's written in russian, but with the translation tool it's gonna be alright.
Nice to hear that the new album "the lost box" is confirmed. I just hope it will be released in all Europe, because you know, Secret Service has still lot of fans not only in Sweden or Russia, but in many other countries like France. It has always be so hard to find some albums on cd, but not so long ago with the 2 albums "Top Secret" and "The very best of Secret Service", we finally get what we have been waiting for so long. I can also remember the songs played by Lili & Sussie that I discovered recently only, and the song "Vivre ailleurs" for which Secret Service wrote the music for one of our french artist from the eighties.
I saw some sequences from the concert in Vladivostok with the new members so Mikael Erlandsson and must admit it's a very good job. First time I saw it, I thought it was a "Secret Service cover" band, but after visiting this website, I realized I was wrong. The voice from Mikael is exactly what it have to be to continue the spirit of the group. I would be very happy to buy the entire concert on dvd. Maybe one day ?

Good morning/day/evening/night. My name is Anton, I'm from Moscow. I'm 19 so I was born 25/03/1992. Nearly that time my dad collected different music: The Beatles, Alphaville, Laid Back, especially Pink Floyd and of course Secret Service, all your disks and also about 2 hundred audio disks. I named such bands because they are among my favourite bands. Tomorrow I'll go to the army. Now I'm listening to this music and even cry. I understand that I woudn't hear my loveliest music for a long time. I found many texts to songs and also found this site. I listened to your song "A Flash In The Night" 13 years ago for the first time and I falled in love to your music. Since then I was looking for a way to tell you that in my opinion you are the best in your category!!!! I wish Health and longevity to you! I love you very much!!!! :((
